CPEP’s Reentry Programs

The purpose of CPEP’s Reentry programs is to get you back to practice safely and with confidence and peace of mind – for you, your patients, and other stakeholders. They come with many benefits, including: 

  • The opportunity to demonstrate competence to licensing authorities, credentialing bodies, and to yourself.
  • A practical return to practice plan that helps you polish your clinical skills and provides guidance on how to navigate the reentry process with confidence.
  • In most cases, no travel is required; the process is done remotely and completed in your home community.

Who Reentry Is for

CPEP’s reentry programs are for physicians, physician assistants, advanced practice nurses, and podiatrists who have taken a voluntary break from clinical practice and are ready to return to the same area of practice for which they most recently practiced or were previously trained.

Types of Reentry Programs

Streamlined Reentry Program

For healthcare professionals voluntarily out of practice for fewer than 10 years.

This timely, practical approach to re-entry fits most budgets and helps you return to practice with confidence and provides a return to practice plan that is efficient and outlines specific activities and steps to support clinical practice.

Enhanced Reentry Program

For healthcare professionals voluntarily out of practice for 10 years or more.

This more in-depth, personalized program includes an educational needs evaluation and structured learning plan with graduated steps to support a return to clinical practice.

The Reentry Process

Each Reentry Program has a distinct process that with its own steps, timeline, and investment.

    Streamlined Reentry Program

    The  entire process from date of enrollment through issuance of the evaluation report and education/reentry plan is approximately 8 weeks.

    Step1:

    1-2 day focused skills evaluation. If technical skills simulation is needed, additional fees will apply and travel may be required. Expanded focus areas can be included for an additional fee.

    Step 2:

    CPEP Associate Medical Directors and staff create a personalized reentry plan.

    Additional No Cost Benefit: Two hours of consulting on the reentry process from our experienced education experts.

    Enhanced Reentry Program

    Most healthcare professionals can expect the entire process to take about 6 months from the time they enroll.

    Step1:

    Enhanced reentry evaluations - Generally one – two day activities conducted remotely that may include:

      • Clinical interviews by specialty-matched clinicians
      • Simulated patient cases
      • Simulated patient documentation exercise
      • Health information review
      • Cognitive function screening
      • Written testing, as needed
      • Technical skills simulations as appropriate for specialty

    Step 2:

    Development of a Personalized Reentry Plan. That plan is usually accomplished in the clinician’s home community. It often includes the following components:

      • Direct patient care experience with preceptor guidance in a clinical practice setting identified by the reentry clinician.
      • Training in use of contemporary medical information resources.
      • Continuing medical education courses, online education and self-study resources.
      • Regular reports and tracking of progress and completion.

    Step 3:

    Implement the Personalized Reentry Plan

      • A key part of the Reentry Plan is the development of a relationship with a preceptor and a practice site. A preceptor is a physician who will serve as an educator and mentor. The preceptor will work closely with the clinician during the transition back into patient care and will work with CPEP to provide regular progress updates.

    NOTE: It is the clinician’s responsibility to identify a preceptor and clinical practice setting in which the patient care components of the Reentry Plan will take place.
