How can this program help?

There are many situations where the program is a prudent next step to addressing a workplace challenge in a healthcare setting. Here are some of the common challenges that may warrant enrollment:

  • Instances of substandard or nonstandard care
  • High complication rates
  • Recurring poor outcomes
  • Ongoing patient care concerns
  • Improper prescribing of controlled drugs
  • Practice drift or change in scope of practice
  • Verification of ongoing adherence to generally accepted standards of medical practice

The Process

The program provides referring organizations with a window into a participant’s practice at a moment in time. Specialty matched reviewers render detailed opinions as to whether or not documented care meets generally accepted standards.

The program is not intended to assess a participants’ underlying knowledge and skills and is not a substitute for a Clinical Skills Assessment. In fact, the program is often a second step to take after participating in a CPEP Assessment.

When a healthcare professional is recommended for the program, CPEP staff reviews the circumstances of the referral and the specific requirements of the referring organization. Then, we create a customized practice review plan that includes chart reviews and regular feedback with an option to engage in longitudinal coaching sessions. Next, the healthcare professional is assigned a specialty matched reviewer with a similar scope of practice to the participant and the program commences.

Participants continue to practice in their communities while enrolled in the program.  The reviewer conducts regular chart reviews and submits reports to the healthcare professional and referring organization on a regular basis with CPEP Associate Medical Director oversight. The reports provide a description and an analysis of the reviewed cases and the reviewer’s rating of the quality of care.

While the program typically lasts 12-18 months, the duration of the program will vary based on each unique situation. There is no CME credit awarded for participation in program.
