CPEP’s 3-day Proper Prescribing of Controlled Substances Seminar, offered in collaboration with the Vanderbilt Center for Professional Health, facilitates an understanding of personal motivations and responsibilities in the patient encounter, cultivates skills in substance abuse disorder identification, and gives participants the skills to improve their systems for managing these patients.

Who Benefits?
This Seminar is open to all healthcare professionals who prescribe controlled substances. Although it is specifically designed for those cited for inappropriate prescribing, it is also suitable for healthcare professionals who wish to improve their comfort and skills managing patients on controlled substances.
It is also designed to fulfill licensing authority or credentialing requirements for remedial education.
When Proper Prescribing of Controlled Substance Can Help
Managing patients on chronic controlled substances is not easy and there are many situations where a new perspective can make a difference. Typical reasons for referral Include:
- Inappropriate dispensing of medications from physicians’ offices
- Prescribing controlled substances in large quantities and/or at too frequent intervals
- Prescribing for family members, friends, or people with known histories of substance abuse
- Prescribing when documentation of the clinical situation is inadequate or non-existent
This course is not…
- A treatment program for drug dependence. Of course, participants in recovery who wish to improve their knowledge and skills in the safe prescribing of controlled drugs are welcome
- A rehabilitation program for clinicians accused of illegally selling drugs for profit

The Proper Prescribing of Controlled Substances Process: What to Expect
The Proper Prescribing of Controlled Substances Seminar is a 3-day Seminar offered in conjunction with the Vanderbilt Center for Professional Health. It is offered remotely and in-depth engagement is expected from all participants. This Prescribing Course covers 10 hours of content for Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act training.
Step 1: Enrollment - After your initial registration, you will receive a confirmation of enrollment within 48 – 72 hours.
Step 2: Online Seminar - The Seminar is taught by a multi-disciplinary team including a physician, a psychologist, and a substance abuse counselor. You will learn appropriate prescribing practices, cultivate new skills in substance abuse disorder identification, develop strategies for discussing personal responsibilities with patients, and identify your personal motivations in patient encounters. You will also have the opportunity to practice your new skills with simulated patients and receive individualized coaching from the faculty. See Seminar Agenda here.
Step 3: Seminar Completion - After the seminar, you will receive a post-seminar report with recommendations from the faculty. Your report can be released to a third party at your request.
